Having your baby in Brazil – how does it work?

Brazil is one of the most generous countries when it comes to foreigners giving birth on their soil. Any baby born in Brazil is Brazilian, and as such, they have the rights of any citizen. This includes the right to have their immediate family live with them, regardless of where they come from.

This is sometimes known as ‘birth tourism’ or having an ‘anchor baby’. It means that if you have your baby in Brazil, your family can remain in the country as permanent residents. If you are thinking of starting an exciting new life in Brazil this is an ideal pathway.

It’s true, Brazil is well known for its love of red tape and bureaucracy. Many travellers come to Brazil and manage to navigate their way through the birthing and immigration processes by themselves. But this does come with its own stresses and strains, particularly if you don’t speak Portuguese well.

Sometimes even staff who work in Brazilian government institutions can be unclear about the rules for foreigners. If you’re not confident of your rights and of how the processes work, it’s all too easy to be given the run around. That’s where we come in.

What are your rights as a parent of a Brazilian baby?

The parents (and siblings) of a baby born in Brazil are eligible to apply for permanent residency. This is regardless of whether or not they have prior ties to Brazil, regardless of what visa they are on, or if they have overstayed and are in the country illegally. This is the law of the land.

While some will give birth while here on working or student visas, others will come to the country on a tourist visa to give birth. If you choose to work with us, our assistance begins once you have legally arrived in the country. We do not get involved with obtaining a visa to enter Brazil.

Welcome to Florianópolis

We are based in the beautiful island city of Florianópolis and as such, can only offer our services if you give birth here. Personally, we think this is the best city in Brazil in which to give birth. It’s among the safest cities in the country. It’s surrounded by forests and unspoilt beaches. Being a capital city, the infrastructure is excellent, particularly the hospital facilities.

What’s involved?

Before you arrive

We speak fluent English as well as Portuguese, so we will make sure that you feel right at home and that everything runs like clockwork.

Our experienced team are here to help you every step of the way, so you can focus on the things that really matter – like taking care of your family.

We will assist you with booking your accommodation before your arrival. (Please note, high season in Florianópolis is between November and end of February each year.)

If you are travelling to Brazil to give birth, we will advise you of the documents you will need to bring with you before you depart. You will also need to check the rules with your airline if you intend to fly while pregnant. We will advise you of the documents you will need to bring with you before you depart.

Please note that you need to get a criminal record check done before you travel to Brazil, and bring it with you. If you have any past criminal record in any country, you will need to disclose this to us. It is essential that we have this information so we can advise you accordingly. This also helps us maintain our good relationships here in Brazil.

Once you land

In your first few days in Florianópolis, we will accompany you to get the initial documents needed to begin the process.

We only work with couples who intend to give birth in a private hospital or have their baby at home. Public hospitals are funded by Brazilian taxpayers and resources are already stretched. Foreigners should not be able to use the public hospital system if they have never paid into the taxation system.

There are English-speaking staff at the hospitals we work with. If you are planning a home birth, we will connect you with the experienced team of midwives that we work with.

Once your baby arrives

Once your baby is born, you normally will stay for 2 nights in the hospital. We will handle all the paperwork from this point, organising your baby’s birth certificate, gathering the necessary declarations and documents that you will need for your applications for your baby’s passport and your permanent residency.

We will accompany you to all your appointments for your applications, so we can translate and assist as required.

Permanent residency visas take approximately two months to be created. Ideally, you will be staying on in Brazil long-term. However, if you cannot stay in Florianópolis, we can collect the visas on your behalf and can forward them to you.

Returning home

Please remember that you cannot travel outside of Brazil with your new baby until their passport has been created. If you intend to travel, we recommend you allow at least 5 weeks after the baby’s birth for this document to be created.

Everyone is different. That’s why we design our services around your needs. Please complete the form below, and we’ll get in touch with a quote for you.
