Becoming a digital nomad in Brazil – is it right for you?

Thinking about becoming a digital nomad in Brazil? Never heard of the term before? Many foreigners who move to Brazil find themselves teaching English to make a living. It makes sense, especially if you’re not fluent in Portuguese. However, with the advent of technology, and companies around the world embracing remote working, there’s now a new breed of worker – the ‘digital nomad’.

A digital nomad is a term which refers to someone who has found ways to make money using their laptop. So as long as they have an internet connection, they can work and have an income. While this may seem like a dream lifestyle, it’s most definitely a reality for many people – myself included.

What kind of skills do I need to become a digital nomad?

There are plenty of skills that lend themselves well to remote working – writers, photographers, social media managers, digital marketers and strategists, designers, developers, bloggers, coders, researchers, editors or virtual assistants. The list is growing by the day.

Some digital nomads run their own online businesses, others work for clients as employees who have negotiated the ability to work remotely, or as freelance contractors.

What is it like being a digital nomad in Brazil?

In short, yes, Brazil is a great place to be if you’re a digital nomad, particularly if you’re weighing this option up against being in the country as an English teacher.

Firstly, you’ll have the freedom to actually travel around and see the country’s many sights. As an English teacher, you’re often stuck in one place. You’ll quickly find yourself feeling just as stuck as you did in your home country.

Also, if you are working for foreign clients, you’ll find your money will go further in Brazil. Especially if you’re earning US dollars, Euros or British Pounds.

Brazil’s major cities all offer fast, reliable wi-fi. You just have to do your research to ensure you’ll have a good connection in your next destination. And this country has no shortage of gorgeous locations where you relax with your laptop. Is there anything more wonderful than working with the sounds of the ocean all around you?

How do I know if this I’m suited to the digital nomad life?

Well, the only person who can answer this question is yourself. There’s a lot that you’ll need to weigh up in your own mind. What are your motivations for travelling? Do you already have experience working remotely? What kind of skills will you be relying on to bring home the bacon?

If you’re looking around your office thinking ‘there’s more to life than this’, take the plunge! It may feel like you’re walking blindly into the unknown. But quite frankly, there are thousands of people who are already doing this and succeeding. In future articles we’ll share some of the more inspiring influencers out there who can help guide you through.
